Dear Dr. Huh,
My mother's first book was published in 1937 "Neurosis and Human Growth' a initial expose of her new theory about neurotic development. It did not attack Freud directly and could be ignored. Her second book published in 1939 ,New Ways in Psychoanalysis, point by point attacked Freud's basic concepts of he libido theory. This could not be ignored and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute withdrew her training privileges. Where upon she and five other members walked out in protest and formed a new psychoanalytic society, the American Institute of Psychoanalysis. The American Psychoanalytic and the International Psychoanalytic then cancelled her membership. The new society and Institute were very idealistic but unfortunately within four years split twice, forming the William Alanson White Society and another faction joined the New York Medical College to function as a psychoanalytic department within an university setting. At the time these splits were disheartening but retrospectivethey served to create a needed diversity.
